NRF’s 2012 Mother’s Day consumer spending survey conducted by BIGinsight predicts that the average spending on Mother’s Day this year will increase. The survey states that the average person is likely to spend $152.52 on gifts, (from $140.73 in 2011).

Retailers are expected to lure buyers with promotions like saving schemes, special menu options at restaurants etc. The total spend on this day is predicted to be around $18.6 billion.

According to the survey, around 66.4 percent of buyers will purchase flowers (amounting to spending worth $2.2 billion), around 32.8 percent of the buyers will chose apparels and accessories (with spending predicted at $1.6 billion) Those buying electronics – which is predicted as 12.7 percent of the buyers, are likely to spend $1.6 billion on various electric gadgets. Around 54.3 percent of the consumers are likely to offer a restaurant treats.

The department store still rides on as a popular site to shop, for 35.6 percent of consumers, which is the most in the survey’s history. Other chosen places to shop were noted to be discount stores, specialty stores including jewelers, florists and electronics stores and specialty clothing stores. One-quarter of shoppers will buy their gifts online.
