According to the Annual Global Summary report of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme which included recent production and import-export of rough figures, Russia is the leading diamond producer with 30.7 percent of global rough production by volume, reports say. Botswana accounted for 19.7 percent of global rough produced, giving it the second place.

In terms of value, Russia accounts for 25.75 percent share or US$ 3.73 billion worth of rough diamonds, while Botswana makes for 25.16 percent or US$ 3.64 billion worth of rough.

India was noted to be the largest direct rough diamond importer with 37.5 percent of global rough diamond import share. It is ahead of European Union which comes in second place, in terms of volume with the European Union enjoying 29.02 percent share in global imports. In value terms India takes on a 30.4 percent share while the EU has a 27.9 percent share of global imports, as per reports.

The KP report also noted that the world’s total rough diamond production was at 124.78 million carats. In value terms it stood at US$ 14.5 billion with the average price was of US$ 116.7 per carat, reports suggest.
