Mugabe says state will take control of diamond mining in Zimbabwe

President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe announced the government will take complete control of all the diamond mines in the country, as per reports. He noted that the mover is to put a halt to the diamond firms from stealing diamonds and rather now have a monopoly in the area with state doing the entire mining, as per reports.

The President mentioned the mining companies were ‘swindling" and "smuggling’ and virtually robbing the government of its wealth. He was also apprehensive of the role of Zimbabweans in the alleged theft, saying that they who were to be the ‘eyes and ears have not been able to see or hear what was going on’, as per reports. Foreign mining companies require to enter into a joint venture with local partners to operate in Zimbabwe. Last month, the government ordered all diamond mining operating in the Marange diamond fields to stop operations as their licences had expired.
