Lucapa Diamond Company Limited announced the recovery of large, valuable diamonds from its Lulo Diamond Concession in Angola, including a 95.45 carat Type 2A gem.

The 95.45 carat diamond is classified as DE, which would normally make the diamond an “Exceptional White” and is confirmed as a Type 2A, which are among the world’s rarest category of diamonds. It is the second largest diamond recovered by Lucapa from Lulo behind the 131.4 carat Type 2A stone discovered in 2012.

Managing Director Miles Kennedy said he was delighted that Lucapa’s exploration efforts at Lulo continued to yield gems of such size and rarity. “It is remarkable that we are continuing to find diamonds of this size and value in such relatively small bulk samples at Lulo,” said Mr. Kennedy. “The recent commissioning of Lucapa’s new DMS diamond plant has enabled us to scale up our diamond recovery operations at Lulo and the results speak for themselves. We go in to 2014 with even greater confidence in our search for the kimberlite pipe or pipes which are shedding these fabulous diamonds.”

The 95.45 carat diamond is the largest of 66 diamonds totaling 206 carats recovered from the BLK_19 bulk sample at Lulo. Other large stones include a 10.95 carat diamond, a 7.65 carat stone, a 7.3 carat diamond and a 5.65 carat stone. Earlier this month, the company recovered a 32.3 carat type IIa diamond.
