The month of April reflected a decrease in India’s polished diamond trade, both in terms of exports and imports. The country’s polished diamond exports dropped in value by 35 percent (on y-o-y basis) to $1.334 billion and in volume terms the same dropped 55 percent to 2.251 million carats. Imports of polished diamonds decreased 76 percent to $355.4 million in value and by 68 percent in volume to 1.188 million carats.
The net polished exports, (valued as excess of exports over imports), increased 82 percent to $978.8 million.
The country’s rough diamond exports rose 21 percent to $115.3 million and imports rose 20 percent to $1.581 billion. The country’s net rough imports increased 20 percent to $1.466 billion.
The activities in April caused the country’s April net diamond account (valued as total of polished and rough exports less the total of polished and rough imports) to be at a deficit of $486.7 million (the same was at a deficit of $680.4 million in April 2011).
