India’s gem and jewellery exports fall by 34.25% in dollar terms

India’s total exports of gem and jewellery for the month of April 2009 dipped by 34.25 percent in dollar terms and amounted to $ 1144.19 million, while the same in April 2008 amounted to $1740.34 million. Exports of cut and polished diamonds in value terms decreased by 39.13 percent and amounted to $4765 million, while in April 2008 it was valued at $1257.73 million. Rough diamond exports also dipped by 52.16 percent and were valued at $50.08 million, from $104.69 million in the same month last year.

There was a 27.83 percent decrease in the exports of coloured gemstones which stood at $12.50 million in April 2009. The total export of gold jewellery also declined by almost 13 percent and amounted to $301.13 million.
