Indian government seeks jewellers’ feedback for a national council

The Indian government is considering setting up a national council to address the issues faced by the Indian gem and jewellery industry. For this, the government has approached jewellers and industry stakeholders to be on board and render suggestions on the setting up of this Council, reports say. It held a meeting in this regards with associations and industry bodies, like FICCI, GJEPC, Bureau of Indian Standards and Indian Bullion and Jewellery Association, reports add.

The Council will be characterised on the lines of a body like Gem Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the apex trade body for India’s gem and jewellery sector. Also, officials from the Commerce Ministry would serve on the national council Board, as per reports. It would serve in bridging the communication gap between the industry and the government.
