IGI launches grading programme in Botswana

The International Gemological Institute’s (IGI) School of Gemology has taken its corporate polished diamond grading programme to the polishing centres of Botswana. The initiative is on behalf of diamond manufacturer Pluczenik Diamonds Botswana (PTY) Ltd.

The 10-day programme was launched in January at the Pluczenik factory in Gaborone. It was attended by the local polishers ranging from bottom polishers, crown polishers and planners to quality control. Lectures were based on theoretical notions, evaluation of the 4Cs, clarity grading, colour grading, use of microscope and loupe, proportions of the round brilliant cut, fancy cuts, diamond fashioning, the analysis of the polish and symmetry of round brilliants and identification of imitations, synthetics and treated diamonds. The IGI recognised Botswana as an upcoming polishing hub and intends to assist them in their need for diamond and jewellery education.
