Gem Diamonds says Letseng operations will not be affected by Lesotho’s political situation

London-listed diamond mining company Gem Diamonds said that it does not anticipate any disruptions of operations at its Letseng mine located in Lesotho owing to the current unrest in Lesotho.

Lesotho’s Prime Minister Thomas Thabane took shelter in South Africa, fleeing his residence after it was surrounded by the army which also overran police stations in Lesotho’s Maseru, reports say. The company noted that at this stage, its management noted Maseru to be calm and there is no disruption at the company’s Letseng mine, located in the mountains, about 4 hours from Maseru, the capital of Lesotho.

As such, it does not anticipate any impact upon its operations at Letseng nor upon any of the company’s sales and marketing operations in respect of the Letseng production.
