GSI exploring diamond deposits in Telangana

India’s potential of being a diamond mining hub takes further momentum as the Geological Survey of India (GSI) is exploring the possible presence of diamond deposits in Telangana, reports say.

The area of exploration covers the Kolhapur region, Maddur-Narayanpet of Mahbubnagar district, along with the Munneru-Paleru river basin area of Khammam district which stretches into Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.

Reports further suggest that the Mahbubnagar district did in the past attract companies to explore for diamond deposits including a private player who discovered kimberlite pipes in 2013.

GSI began its said exploration in 2014 with completion expected by 2016. The central government gave its nod to the project in 2015 and GSI has listed its activity as part of its 2015-16 field season, as per Union minister of state for steel and mines Vishnu Deo Sai, reports say. India currently is home to the Panna mines in Madhya Pradesh which is an active zone for diamond mining.
