GJF and IIJ join hands for 20-city summit called Vinaya

The All India Gems & Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) and Indian Institute of Jewellery (IIJ) have joined hands to conduct a 20-city educational summit entitled ‘Vinanya’, promoting education to instill further growth in the Indian gem and jewellery industry, and build it on par with global industry specific standards.

This summit forms in line with the current GJF Chairman Mr. C Vinod Haygariv’s theme for the year “Talent for the Talented”. As Mr. Haygariv explains, “Vinaya is a monumental project for GJF & IIJ. It’s after affects will be immeasurable to the industry. In India, hardly 6 percent to 8 percent of the industry lies in the organised sector. GJF & IIJ will engineer Vinaya to transform the industry from the unorganised sector to the organised sector. In order to do that, the industry needs to open up and first needs to get educated. This is one of GJF’s endeavors to promote, protect and progress the Indian gems & jewellery industry”.

In the Indian consumer equation as noted by Mr. Vasantraj Birawat, Chairman, Education & Talent Development Committee, living is more expensive in metros with higher inflation rates as compared to mini metros or towns. The consumer in smaller towns tends to spend more as savings are higher. Also, while the consumer in the metro is exposed to other purchase opportunities like electronics and gadgets, the small town counterpart is not as well exposed to these options, and he rather invests in savings and later into jewellery.

Mr. Vedant Jatia, Chairman, IIJ commented “India as a country is growing. Urban India is rapidly developing and growing, but on the other hand rural India is amplifying and the business of jewellery is actually flourishing. The sale and consumption of jewellery in rural India, is way higher, then, in comparison to urban India. Rural India needs the actual education as jewellers in these areas are not exposed to international business standards and methodologies. It is in rural India where the true numbers in terms of volume for jewellery are, hence, Vinaya will be focused more on Tier II & Tier III cities.” Mr. Prem Kothari, Co-Chairman, Education & Talent Development committee commented “It is in the best interest of the industry that we start educating our customers. When I say customer, I am not only referring to a jeweller, I am also hinting that a jewellery manufacturer enlighten its customer being a jewellery retailer. Educating a customer is a sure shot conversion to creating a sale.”

Vinaya will educate on technical topics related to Jewellery Manufacturing, Designing, Gemmology, Diamond Grading, Jewellery Retailing and Business Management, Bullions, Standardisation of Quality, Direct Tax Codes related to the industry. Each city will host a two day show, when day 1 will be open to all members of the local jewellery fraternity along with their employees. Day 2 will be a pay and enter event open only to business owners, with gem and jewellery industry professionals and veterans invited as speakers. Pre Summit, a GJF & IIJ squad along with the local association heads will survey the assigned territory. The summit has been planned with expectations of atleast 150 to 200 jewellers visiting the show in their respective cities. “We have only chosen those cities in India where there is an atleast 350 jewellers fraternity in the proposed territory.” Jatia further added.

GJF is a trade body, in the process of having itself converted into a statutory body that caters to the needs of protecting, progressing and promoting the gems and jewellery trade in India.
