GJEPC forms Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India

Taking forward its commitment to enhance and upgrade skills in the gem and jewellery sector, the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has formed the Gem & Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI).

This initiative will take form as a joint venture between the GJEPC, Gem & Jewellery Federation (GJF), Seepz Gems and Jewellery Manufacturers' Association (SGJMA) & Jewellers Association of Jaipur (JJA) and promoted under the aegis of NSDC.

The Chairman, Shri. Rajiv Jain commented “The entire gem & jewellery industry of India had been pitching for GJSCI with NSDC for the last few months. I congratulate the industry on commencing the Skill Council in the gems & jewellery Sector. It will go a long way in training and enhancing the skills of artisans, and help the industry overcome the shortage of skilled manpower.”

GJSCI will have on its governing council, 11 directors from industry and 2 from the government. Of the 11 industry directors, 5 will be nominated by GJEPC, 4 by GJF, and one each by SGJMA and JJA. Currently the Gem & Jewellery sector employs a workforce of around 3.4 million. GJSCI aims to train, skill and enhance 4.07 million people by 2022.

GJSCI is one of many Sector Skill Councils being set up by NSDC in association with the industry, with the objective to create 500 million skilled workers in India by 2022.
