The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), the apex body of the gem and jewellery industry in India, recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Eastern Regional office at The Bengal Hotel on 11th February, 2010. The event recounted contributions of the office in achieving growth for India’s gem and jewellery sector, which accounts for 13 percent of the country’s total exports.

The eastern region is one of the leading contributors to the country’s exports, driven by its tradition of craftsmanship for handmade gold jewellery. The eastern region has registered export growth from Rs. 175 crores to Rs. 4110 crores, in the past 10 years. Aligning efforts to infuse growth into India's gem and jewellery industry, the GJEPC's eastern regional office had campaigned to create the country’s first sector specific SEZ for Gem & Jewellery in Kolkata, namely Manikanchan and is aiming to achieve an international standard artisan cluster. The office manages gem and jewellery business affairs in Eastern & North Eastern states of India like West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur ,Sikkim etc.

Mr. Pankaj Parekh, Regional Chairman, GJEPC said “This celebration marks the successful running of the Eastern Regional office of the GJEPC. Ten years back, the total exports from Eastern Region was a fraction of the highest exporters performance, whereas now in both the categories, namely DTA & SEZ , highest exports have been won by members of this region who are also the main sponsors of this event. I hope with every year, the potential of this region is exploited to its fullest by GJEPC.”

Mr. Vasant Mehta, Chairman, GJEPC said “With the assistance of the Government of India, we at GJEPC are committed to take the industry forward. Since 1966, GJEPC has streamlined the scattered efforts of Indian manufactures and exporters and established a relentless industry on which the Indian economy thrives. With the Eastern Regional office having successfully grown in the past 10 years a benchmark has been set of other regions to up their performance. This is the need of the hour.”

GJEPC was established in 1966 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and today caters to approximately 5500 exporters and has a strength of 6,500 members across India. Its Eastern Regional office has been providing valuable services to its member exporters and is proactively engaged in disseminating various policy and promotional information to its members, and is working to support the GJEPC in developing talent, skills and efforts to infuse growth within India’s gem and jewellery sector.
