GIA withdraws counterfeit GIA report found in Hong Kong

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) informs about a counterfeit GIA report discovered in Hong Kong, and originated in Antwerp. The report looked similar to an authentic GIA report, but its close comparison with an authentic GIA report, revealed it being false. The font, colour, and background used in the blue shaded area of the counterfeit report did not match the original. Also, the report number did not correspond with the stone, even though it was an actual report number for a different stone, and a study of the respective diamond’s measurements, colour and clarity clearly did not match the GIA report.

GIA has been particular of providing services to diamantaires, who wish to re-check the authenticity of the GIA reports. The GIA has the Report Check mechanism, which is available for only those diamonds graded from January 1, 2000, to the present day. Also, the GIA Report Verification Service can also be used to confirm the authenticity of a GIA Diamond Grading Report and Diamond Dossier®.

GIA has been engaged with global law enforcement agencies to countercheck such illegal activities and prevent their further occurrence. It has withdrawn the counterfeit report from circulation and kept it in its possession, while it searches for more information on the report.
