GIA to Give ‘Return Date’ for Goods Submitted

The Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) long turnaround time for the stones sent for certification has always been the troubling factor for the diamond manufacturers and traders. However, the GIA has introduced a change to communicate to the customer the exact date an article is ready for delivery or pick-up.

Through the newly introduced change, the GIA is publishing location- specific “Return Date” based on calendar days in place of “Turnaround Time” based on business days. By providing a specific date for return, the GIA is able to give its clients clearer expectations and allow for better planning.

When asked about what prompted the change, Nirupa Bhatt, managing director of GIA in India and the Middle East, said, “We recognize that unprecedented long service times, driven by a 70 per cent increase in submissions since the end of 2012, are greatly impacting the way our clients do business. While we have increased our global capacity by 35 per cent and are implementing an aggressive growth plan, we realise it will not immediately shorten service times; therefore, we are also taking immediate actions to clarify service times and enable our clients to make the best decisions for their business. This includes publishing an expected return date based on calendar days rather than business days, committing to delivery dates by weight ranges, and expanding the fast track service announced in August 2013.”

Along with all GIA locations worldwide, GIA in India will provide a ‘Return Date’ for gems submitted in Mumbai for grading.
