GIA prepares seminar on diamond treatments and synthetics for Shanghai trade

The seminar will be led by GIA’s Dr. Wuyi Wang, director of Research and Development

A one day seminar on diamond treatments and synthetics is being organised by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Shanghai, inviting the trade in Shanghai to learn more on the subject through a presentation by GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America) Dr. Wuyi Wang, director of Research and Development. The seminar is free and is slated on November 22 at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

His presentation will cover:• Major diamond color treatment techniques, including irradiation with or without annealing, High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) treatment and multiple-method treatments• The main analytical techniques and identification features to differentiate natural counterparts • An update on synthetic gemstones and diamonds, including Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) and HPHT synthetics. Further, Wang will also present private similar seminars to Shanghai Diamond Exchange members and the faculty and staff at the Tongji University.

Wang holds over 20 years of expertise in diamond geochemistry and the treatments of diamond and other gem material and is widely published in gemological and geological publications, including GIA’s Gems & Gemology (G&G); the Journal of Gemmology; and American Mineralogist, Earth and Planetary Science Letters. Amongst his honours include the Richard T. Liddicoat and American Gem Society Awards, the Dr. Edward J. Gubelin Most Valuable Article Award from G&G.
