GIA postpones GRC Conference

Will reimburse registration funds received so far
GIA postpones GRC Conference

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has postponed hosting its Second Gemological Research Conference (GRC), which was scheduled for August 21–23, 2009, in San Diego, California, inspite receiving an enthusiastic registration from many likely participants. “Taking this action is especially difficult considering the enthusiasm and synergy that so many people have contributed to the planning of the event,” said GRC Co-chair Brendan Laurs.

The serious downturn in the global economy has led GIA to reconsider the timing of the GRC, and it has decided not to hold the conference next summer. “The success of the conference is dependent on attracting participants from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas, and the current economic climate has created significant budget and travel restrictions for many. Thus, GIA believes it is in everyone’s best interest to hold the conference at a more favorable time.”

The GIA will reimburse total funds of those who have already registered for the GRC, within the next few weeks.
