GIA Lab graded diamond as Fancy Vivid Purple-Pink – 14.83 Ct – IF (excellent clarity)– EX (excellent) polish – VG (very good) symmetry. The Lab noted the stone is the biggest FANCY VIVID PURPLE-PINK diamond ever certified by GIA.

«A large Fancy Vivid Purple Pink, internally flawless, with perfect visual characteristics such as this one, enters the market literally, once in a generation. The stone has the most desirable pink undertone dispersed perfectly, and looks much bigger in relation to its actual weight. As of today, it is the most important vivid purplish pink ever unearthed in Russia and it will enter the books of history as an iconic Russian gem. Its beauty overcomes the important pink diamonds sold at auction in the last decade and Its retail price should exceed 60 million dollars. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to hold this pink wonder in my hands» commented Eden Rachminov, Fancy Colour Rerearch Foundation Advisory Board member, one of the most reliable experts on coloured diamonds.

Provenance

“Nijinsky” is a rare 27.85 carat clear pink rough diamond, from which The Spirit of the Rose diamond was cut. It was the largest pink crystal ever mined in Russia.

The “Nijinsky” rough diamond was unearthed in July, 2017 from the Ebelyakh deposit in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in northeast Russia, immediately making headlines.

With its impeccable characteristics, free from defects and flaws, and exceptionally rich pink colour, the crystal was rated as the best discovery of the year by “The National Jeweler,” a well-known American magazine.

The preparation and cutting process, which took a full year, was performed at the “Diamonds of ALROSA” cutting factory in Moscow. The stone’s size, colour and clarity required special attention from cutters and polishers. Pink diamonds actually have a certain level of internal stress, which demands special care and high-level cutting skills to avoid cleavage.

Choosing a diamond’s shape can also affect the intensity of its colour. For the pink crystal, an oval cut was chosen, as it accentuated its unique pink shade while the elongated oval contours preserved as much of the size of the original stone as possible.

It is named “The Spirit of the Rose” under the name of a legendary ballet. A short ballet called “Le Spectre de la rose” (The Spirit of the Rose), staged by the Ballet Russes company and the legendary impresario Sergei Diaghilev, premiered on April 19th, 1911 at the famous Théâtre de Monte-Carlo. A dancing miniature, just 10 minutes long, was set aside for the two biggest stars of the Ballet Russes, dancers Tamara Karsavina and Vaslav Nijinsky.

The idea for the ballet was based on a poem by French romantic poet Theofile Gautier. The poem’s title character is the ghost of a souvenir rose, pinned to a young girl’s ball gown. For over 100 years, the everlasting brilliance of this ballet has sparkled on the world’s best theatre stages: the Metropolitan Opera, London Coliseum, Royal Danish Theatre and, of course, Mariinsky and Bolshoi theatres.

During the century-plus history of “The Spirit of the Rose,” the part of the mysterious nocturnal visitor was played by many legendary dancers: Maris Liepa, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Nikolay Tsiskaridze, Rudolph Nureev. But the ballet was of course set aside for the brightest star of the Ballets Russes, a raw diamond carefully cut by Sergei Diaghilev, Vaslav Nijinsky.
