First diamonds mined from Ontario go on sale

Altogether 131 diamonds, the first to be mined at Canadian province of Ontario and also certified by the Government of Ontario, were displayed and sold recently at Birks & Mayors’ flagship Toronto store. The diamonds are mined from De Beers’ Victor mine in Northern Ontario. This is the first time in Ontario that the diamonds have completed the entire journey from mining, cutting to polishing to being retailed, all within Ontario itself.

The diamonds carry an estimated value of $4 million, and are priced beginning from $1,400. The costliest of the diamonds is worth around $170,000. Of these diamonds, around $2 million worth of stones have been polished and the rest are uncut.

The retailer believes the sale has generated a good response, especially in the challenging economic situation.
