American Jewelry Design Council (AJDC), an organisation of renowned jewellery designers involves itself in raising awareness of jewellery as fine art, through its annual jewellery design event. Its group of designers participate in the event, designing jewellery and objects d'art in metal, centered around a theme.

The theme for the year 2009 was entitled ‘Explosion’, which designers depicted thorough concepts of nature, war, peace, population and creation. Barbara Heinrich designed 'Before and After', a pair of earrings explaining the transition of seeds bursting from pods, in gold and enamel; Michael Good depicted hand raised gold and bronze flower petals, emerging from a fiery opal core; Mark Schneider crafted a pendant in gold with gem encrusted stars emerging from a diamond nucleus and named it 'Big Bang' after the theory; Sarah Graham’s 'Zygote' pendant appeared like a golden sperm entering a blackened steel egg, symbolizing population explosion.

Ruby tipped golden spears shooting outward was a design called 'Ka Boom' by Alan Revere; Christo Kiffer designed the 'Diamond Burst' ring, with dozens of small diamonds emitting from a central large diamond; Ron Hargrove designed a gold, platinum, diamond and pearl brooch bearing a complex circular design to explain expansion and contraction; Susan Sadler designed the Bakelite and moonstone cuff with golden waves.

Designer Diana Vincent created a shoulder brooch of gold, diamonds and pearls, entitled it 'Give Peace a Chance' - a fusion of concepts of war, peace and its many accoutrements. Jose Hess made an onyx bomb with a yellow sapphire tipped fuse; William Schraft designed a missile necklace in silver, gold and diamonds; while Cornelis Hollander’s design - 'Two Bullets is enough' depicts an 11 ct oval Quartz as a backdrop to two gold and diamond bullets; Susan Helmich created the 'Aftermath' pin with a Brazilian Agate backdrop.

The deisgns of 'Explosion' will exhibit at the JANY show July 26-29, 2009. A coffee table style book entitled 'Brilliance', authored by renowned jewellery design business professionals Cindy Edelstein and Frank Stankus, carries the creative works of some of the annual design festivals of AJDC.
