Diamond rings top Sotheby’s fall sale

A demand for big white diamond rings was demonstrated last week when five filled the top lots of Sotheby’s Sept. 24 sale in New York. A 15.10-carat pear-shaped diamond set in a platinum ring led the sale, garnering $2.1 million.

An anonymous bidder purchased the D, VVS2 potentially internally flawless diamond, paying $139,403 per carat.

Overall, Sotheby’s auction of Important Jewels totaled $23.7 million, with 82 percent sold by lot and 90 percent sold by value.A Harry Winston platinum ring with a 19.51-carat emerald-cut E color VVS2 diamond also sold for $2.1 million, or $107,893 per carat, exceeding its pre-sale high estimate of $1.8 million.
