DRI creates history in solving case of conflict diamonds

A recent case of diamond smuggling was reported from Mahidharpura diamond centre of Surat on 18th September 08, which has turned out to be the most successful case of conflict diamonds solved by the DRI so far.

Two citizens of Guena and Lebanon, namely Yusuf Oselia and Robai Jussian, were held by Surat and Ahmedabad team in a joint operation for smuggling diamonds worth Rs.3.85 crores. Both individuals were known to have imported diamonds into India via Dubai, without Kimberley Process certificates, which is mandatory for diamond import into the country. Also, they were operating from rented offices in Mahidharpura.

DRI additional Director Gen V.Ramu, Dy.Director Sh.Prashant Kumar with Surat DRI Asstt. Director Sh S.R.Karnikand and their had raided the Arpan complex of Mahidharpura area, following a lead of blood diamonds being sold. Both accused came to Surat on 14th September 08 via Mumbai airport. A sum of Rs.98000 was recovered without any account for the same. The accused have not extended their Visa which expired on 18th September 08. Both have been sent to jail for further investigation by DRI.
