The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) in association with Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB) hosted a Diamond Detection Expo and Symposium (DDES) at BDB, Mumbai on 15th and 16th December 2015.

DDES, an educational initiative, is organised in order to impart knowledge on synthetic diamonds, and their detection through various available technologies. The 2 day event included a display of the latest equipment/machinery, along with talks and panel discussions with renowned experts from the trade.

Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman, GJEPC said “DDES is a first of its kind effort to bring diamond detection researchers, leading diamond detection machine manufacturers under one roof and keep sellers as well as buyers abreast about the knowledge and in-depth information on synthetic diamonds and its detection through various technologies. During these two days we would be able to gauge demand and what types of machinery are required at an affordable price-point.”

Anoop Mehta, President, BDB said “I am pleased that BDB is a part of organising DDES, which is not only give away knowledge on diamond detection but is also bringing researchers and manufacturers of diamond detections machines under one roof. We are facing challenges in regards to synthetic diamond detection but we are taking all efforts to tackle these challenges.”

On Day 1, during panel discussion about Detection – Current and Future, Dr. Phillip Martineau, IIDGR gave presentation on Detection of Synthetic Diamonds: The Current Situation; Dr. Thomas Hainschwang, GGTL made presentation on Coloured Diamond Detection & Identification of Lab Grown Diamonds; Wuyi Chang, Director of Research & Development, GIA spoke about Advances in CVD Technology & Associated Challenges for Detection while Jean Pierre Chalain, SSEF spoke about Testing Melee Sizes & Large Throughput. Discussion was moderated by Pranay Narvekar. During the discussion stress was put on finding effective and cheaper means for diamond detection.

There were other discussions in regards to comparison between natural and manmade diamonds; Infrared Spectroscopy and ASDI Automated Spectral Diamond Inspection held during the day.
