CIBJO’s Diamond Commission presents report

The Diamond Commission of CIBJO, The World Jewellery Confederation, has released its special report, in which it informs about aspects related to consumer confidence and the ‘nomenclature for synthetic diamonds’ amongst others. The report will be presented to the attendees at the 2011 CIBJO Congress on March 14 in Porto, Portugal.

Addressing the issue of nomenclature for synthetic diamonds, the report states that after discussions at CIBJO Congresses of 2009 and 2010, the Commission felt it was more or less in line with the nomenclature of the International Diamond Council (IDC) and as such the definitions of the Diamond Book need only some fine tuning to further ensure consumer protection from misleading nomenclature.

Concerning consumer confidence, the report includes a comment from French CIBJO delegate Gerard Grospiron pertaining to introduce the term ‘natural"’ when referring to a mined diamond, and guidelines to be set for using the terminology ‘artificial’, ‘assembled’, and ‘composite’ stones. The report also presents insights into lighting and its effect on colour grading colourless diamonds and its direct bearing on consumer confidence in diamonds, which the report explains though a reference of an article by Michael Cowing "A Cure for the Fluorescence Blues."
