CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri met with former U.S. President Bill Clinton on October 28, for a discussion on the World Jewellery's Confederation active commitment to sustainable development projects in those areas of the world in which the greater jewellery sector is active.

The meeting with President Clinton was part of a two-day gathering organised by the World Business Forum in Milan, with President Clinton delivering the keynote address. He spoke on good global citizenship. Dr. Cavalieri was attending the event as an official guest of the organisers.

"During my discussion with President Clinton, I described the evolution of CIBJO's strategy for proactive Corporate Social Responsibility, particularly from our organisation's acceptance into the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations in 2006, and our commitment on behalf the worldwide jewellery industry to the fulfilment of UN's Millennium Development Goals," said Dr. Cavalieri after the meeting. "In his speech to the World Business Forum, President Clinton had emphasised that worldwide inequality is a threat to all of our futures, and had stressed that we have to focus on making immediate actionable impact now. I applauded him for his sentiments and said that is exactly what we are doing in CIBJO."

"President Clinton was most interested in what we are doing and expressed his support," Dr. Cavalieri added. Dr. Cavalieri had briefly outlined the programme being planned for the World Jewellery Confederation Education Foundation (WJCEF), a body created by CIBJO in 2008 with support of the United Nations, to advance knowledge in the jewellery community about CSR principles and practices.
