Antwerp’s diamond industry formulates the Antwerp Diamond Masterplan

Amidst the changing environment of the global diamond industry, the diamond industry of Antwerp has adopted a new outlook under the platform Project 2020 Antwerp Diamond Masterplan, for it to remain abreast with these changes and be the forerunner of the global diamond industry as it has always been.

The two main objectives of the Antwerp Diamond Masterplan are -to build growth and innovation opportunities and secondly to build trust and confidence within the industry and with external stakeholders. To achieve the Masterplan objectives, five key elements have been outlined - Growing Antwerp as a Diamond Trading Hub; Antwerp as a Diamond Knowledge Centre; Education and Transparency; Community Integration and City Experience and Job Creation.

The endeavour has been launched with the support of Governor of the Province of Antwerp, Cathy Berx. It was born out of a series of meetings at the Antwerp Provinciehuis, which voiced opinions from within the industry leading to the formation of a Steering Committee comprised of industry stakeholders. The Committee in turn drafted a vision document that outlined ‘Antwerp will always be the beating heart of the global diamond community’ - the basis of the Diamond Masterplan for Antwerp.

The plan is expected to be implemented by 2015, with around 40-50 percent of the plan being initiated by year end.

Also, the MAS | Diamond Pavilion, the joint initiative of AWDC (Antwerp World Diamond Centre) and the Provincial Diamond Museum of Antwerp was opened by governor Cathy Berx. The Diamond Pavilion is created as a narrative of the leading role of Antwerp in the global diamond industry, those active in the diamond trade, now and before, of the history, economic importance and other aspects of Antwerp. It also houses a diamond shop anjd presents the famous diamond ECC tennis racket, finished with 1.167 sparkling diamonds “cut in Antwerp”; the city shield of Antwerp and a piece of jewelry from the Napoleonic era. The Pavilion invites all those who love diamonds.
