Angola expects rough diamond product to reach 10 million carats in 2014

Angola expects rough diamond product to reach 10 million carats in 2014

Angola predicts its rough diamond production could touch 10 million carats in the calendar year 2014, or a 25 percent increase, reports say. Diamond companies need to operate to expectations, as per Angolan Geology and Mining Minister Francisco Queiroz, reports suggest.

The country’s rough diamonds mines in 2013 stood at 8 million carats. This year, expectations are that industrial scale mining companies would extract 9.5 million carats of diamonds and artisanal miners would contribute another 550,000 carats, reports say. Although there had been a low production in May, the Minister noted it was due to mill maintenance at the country’s largest mine - Catoca mine, and that this was a temporary phase, reports add.
