AWDC to create landmark to celebrate Antwerp’s diamond industry

The long held connection between the City of Antwerp and the diamond industry is being celebrated through a diamond year – “Antwerp, shaping the Diamond Story” – being organised by the City, from late 2017 to early 2018. The City and the diamond industry have been inextricably linked for more than 550 years.

The celebration would highlight all aspects of the industry with numerous events. During this time, the new experience museum, DiVA Antwerp Home of Diamonds, will open its doors on the Suikerrui.

On the occasion of this festive period, the Antwerp diamond industry plans to unveil a landmark that symbolizes all aspects of the diamond industry. The purpose of it is to fill the gap between Antwerp being home to the most important diamond trade center in the world and the lack of a symbol of the same around Antwerp. The landmark would be developed with the support of the City of Antwerp, and on the lines of a work of art that will provide the Antwerp diamond district a permanent and prominent visibility. It will eventually be located in the neighborhood of De Keyserlei, near the heart of the Antwerp diamond district. The Antwerp World Diamond Centre has launched a Request For Proposal to all design agencies and artists seeking a creative concept for the landmark.

The artwork is required to incorporate the diamond industry in all regards: economic, historical, cultural, etc. The landmark is expected to be officially inaugurated by September 2017.
