Names of 60 contestants from amongst the participants at the Thailand International Jewelry Award 2009 (TIJA2009) have been selected as finalists. The competition was created with the intent to boost the caliber of jewellery designers from across the globe, and give them due recognition. Somchai Phornchindarak, the CEO of BGJF, said: "In the past, jewellery designers have mostly worked behind the scenes and were not fully recognised for their contribution. By introducing such a prestigious contest with international participation, both the exhibition and the award will provide designers with the platform and acknowledgment they ought to have. Through our generous sponsors we have provided both the resources and the opportunity for creative talent to be expressed."

The contest saw participation from 18 countries including Japan and the Phillipines to the USA and Brazil. The 60 finalists will have the opportunity to exhibit their manufactured jewellery at the upcoming Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (BGJF), scheduled between February 25 to March 1, 2009. Designers will have a chance to further their reputation and will receive international exposure as the displays are exhibited at various shows around the world. The top three winners will all receive golden trophies, as well as other prizes.

Phornchindarak adds, "The current trend in the Asian jewellery industry means that as the market continues to grow, so does the level of competition amongst manufacturers. It is now obvious to all concerned that jewellery design has become a key component to increasing sales and gaining the sought after edge in the market." Vichai Assarasakorn, president of the Thai Gem And Jewelry Traders Association further adds, "In addition to the immediate benefits, the long term aim of such a project is to help to improve jewellery quality and industry standards, not only in Thailand, but throughout the world. The skills and craftsmanship of Thai artisans have been long admired by international buyers and highly praised for their distinguishing qualities and we wish to build on this asset."
