51st Bangkok Gem and Jewellery Fair concludes

Drawing to a close on 2 March 2013, the 51st edition of the Bangkok Gem and Jewellery Fair (BGJF) concluded on a low modest note. The fair was slated between February 26 to march 2 2013.

This year the gemstones section received decent response to business transactions, as prices are strong and very less replacement of rough available .China was one of the important buyers. Other product segments like diamonds and gold had lower business response. Gold jewellery buying was affected by the volatility in prices. Also, suspension of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Indian and Bangkok, dampened the spirits of Indian buyers who were shying from buying jewellery. TGJTA President Mr. Somchai Phornchindarak mentioned that that they are speaking with the Indian counterparts and a team of people are going soon to discuss the facts with them and see that jewellery is not out of FTA.

Overall, there was low visitor traffic and a 15 percent drop in booths this year over last year. The show was slated close to other trade shows like the Signature Mumbai and Hong Kong Show which exhibitors noted could have caused low traffic. The China International Gold Jewellery & Gem Fair- Shenzhen also coincided with the dates of BGJF, resulting in low traffic at BGJF.
