Secondary diamond market gets a booster
DTC recently made an encouraging statement for the medium and small diamond operators, that after it has supplied roughs to its sightholders and met their complete demand, any excess roughs would be made available to the secondary market. It's a great move one would think, for generic promotion of diamonds. While the big players do call the shots in terms of trends and trade patterns, the small and medium sized players largely account for the reach of the diamond industry which has become expansive today.

To understand the reaction of the Indian diamond industry to the DTC initiative, Diamond World contacted GJEPC's Vasant Mehta who praised this step saying, "I welcome this step as rough diamonds will now be available to secondary market directly from DTC. Manufactures will not have to pay extra profit to the middleman and as such there will be some profit for them." All in all one can hope for a win-win situation for both sides of the coin if the initiative fructifies successfully. But, although the additional supply of roughs would open up hopes, caution would be required to keep the pipeline uncluttered.
