Sotheby’s Geneva sale to offer 24.78 carat Fancy Intense Pink
Is one of the rarest gemstones to be offered at an auction

Sotheby’s sale of Magnificent Jewels to be held in Geneva on Tuesday, 16 November, 2010 will offer one of the rarest gemstones ever offered at auction - a 24.78 carat Fancy Intense Pink Emerald cut Diamond seen in the market some 60 years ago. The stone displays the most perfect pure pink colour, graded 'fancy intense pink' by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and is presently graded as VVS2 clarity and assessed to be one of the rare and coveted type IIa classification (which comprises less than 2 percent of all of the world’s gem diamonds).. The GIA states that the stone may be potentially flawless after repolishing.

David Bennett, Chairman, Europe and the Middle East, Sotheby’s International Jewellery Department, said: “It is a great honour to present this 24.78 carat Fancy Intense Pink Diamond to an international audience as it is one of the most desirable diamonds ever to come to auction and its beauty has haunted me since the very first time I set eyes on it some years ago”. The diamond carries a pre-sale estimate price of US$ 27-38 million and comes from a private collection after 60 years since it was purchased from Harry Winston. This apart, the sale includes around 500 lots, including white diamonds and exceptional coloured gemstones, jewels with important provenance, period gems and creations signed by the world’s greatest jewellers.

Diamonds & Coloured Gemstones: - four exceptional step-cut white diamonds, all D colour: including signed pieces like - a magnificent diamond ring by Graff, set with a cutcornered square step-cut diamond weighing 20.16 carats (estimate sale price: US$2.5-3.5 million); a diamond ring by Harry Winston featuring an emerald cut diamond weighing 20.18 carats (estimate US$1-1.6 million) and a Van Cleef & Arpels diamond ring weighing 16.27 carats, (estimate : US$ 1.2-1.8 million); a diamond ring made with a cut-cornered rectangular stepcut diamond, weighing 18.37 carats and assessed as type IIa with flawless purity and excellent polish and symmetry (estimate: US$ 1,950,000–2,550,000).

Coloured diamonds : A stunning Fancy Intense Pink Diamond ring weighing 4.59 carats (estimated US$ 1,150,000-2,150,000), an exceptional Fancy Vivid Yellow Heart-shaped diamond ring (estimate:US$ 950,000- 1,300,000) weighing 12.16 carats, the stone is internally flawless.

Signed pieces - : a very fine Kashmir Sapphire and Diamond ring by Boucheron features a cushion-shaped sapphire weighing 9.47 carats (estimate: US$ 500,000-700,000), a superb Burmese Ruby and Diamond ring by Settepassi (estimateUS$ 500,000-800,000) A refined pair of Fine Fancy Blue Diamond and Diamond pendent ear clips by Alexandre Reza.

Jewels with Important Provenance includes a collection of Cristina Ford, predominantly pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels – from the 1960s and 1970s with many turquoise and coral sets and an emerald and diamond parure set with Colombian emeralds, an emerald and diamond bracelet ( estimate: US$ 80,000- 120,000). A selection of jewels formerly owned by Christina Onassis mainly by Van Cleef & Arpels including a ruby and diamond bangle (estimate: US$ 25,000-35,000) and a ruby and diamond necklace and a pair of clips (estimateUS$ 75,000-130,000). A ruby and diamond bracelet by Petochi, formerly in the collection of Countess Mona Bismarck (estimateUS$ 80,000-140,000), a diamond cuff bangle made by Cartier in 1938 for HH Abbas Hilmi II Bey (estimatedUS$ 80,000-110,000).

Fine Period & Signed Jewels 32 creations by Cartier, 45 jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels, 17 items by Bulgari and a selection of jewels by Adler, Suzanne Belperron, Boucheron, Buccellati, Chanel, Chopard, Dali, de Grisogono, M. Gérard, Graff, Hemmerlé, Janesich, Marchak, Mauboussin, Alexandre Reza and Tiffany. David Webb will be represented by some 90 pieces from an important private collection.

The sale is slated for November 16, 2010, in Geneva with the exhibition of lots will be held from November 13-16.
