The 44th edition of the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, will conclude tomorrow, after a five-day edition from September 15-19, 2009 at the Impact Challenger, at Muang Thong Thani. The trade response so far has been moderate, although the show was prepared to welcome an improving market with its theme of - “Variety of Gems” showcasing a plethora of gems in all price points, a new Diamond Fine Pavilion, the Queen’s Cup Ploi Thai Jewelry Awards and a special dedicated Zero Vat pavilion for rough gemstones from around the world.

The Diamond Fine Pavilion included 100 booths which verifies the enthused participation by the industry. The Thai gem and jewellery industry held a big showcasing with the launch of Ploi Thai, a joint initiative between the Thai government and the Thai Gem & Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA) to brand Thailand’s gem and jewellery products, and the Thai gold jewellery art was exhibited at the Kanchanapisek Royal Goldsmith College exhibit. The event didn’t lack participation and hosted TGJ Elite Creations, Hot 2010 Vol. 1, and the Silver Export Club Showcase, Gem & Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), Srinakharinwiroj University, Chulalongkorn University, Kanchanapisek Royal Goldsmith College, Silpakorn University, the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

It saw participants from all categories of the trade including diamonds, precious and semi precious gemstones, pearls, synthetic stones, gold, silver and platinum jewellery in all price points, packaging materials, machines, tools and supplies, banking services, freight forwarders, trade publications.

There were few buyers until today, but the trading focused on quality products. The Baht being strong, political strains and VAT issues seem to have resulted in slowed demand of coloured gemstones. Although some more buyer activity is expected in the last two days as the Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair is just round the corner.

The event is a jointly effort of the Thai Gem & Jewelry Traders Association (TGJTA) and the Department of Export Promotion (DEP). According to reports, the country’s total gem and jewellery export is likely to touch $9 billion between January – December 2009.
