Standardising Faith
The Indian government recently expressed intentions to make hallmarking of gold jewellery compulsory. It hopes to materialise this by Diwali this year, a peak sales period for gold. With this, the government is also contemplating on aspects like rules and infrastructure, which would have to be reconsidered. Although the government has been promoting hallmarking, it has not been able to achieve much in this, owing to setbacks like inadequate infrastructure pan India to see this process through.

India is a gold loving nation, where purchases are made for symbolisms of auspiciousness, pride of wedding gifts and investments. The country thrives on buying jewellery based on trust with its jeweller. Although there has been a rise in the organised set up of the industry, over last 15 years, there is yet a major section of the industry which remains unorganised. Consumers have been purchasing jewellery from jewellers who have served them for generations.

Adding standards to this scenario ensures more freedom for consumers to purchase and sell their gold and gold jewellery. It is a booster to simultaneously infuse the sense of transparency within the industry. This was a move probably long overdue. Giving consumers the independence to value their gold, based on the standards, gives a sense of fulfilment in knowing what investments one holds, it speaks upfront of the value. Standardisation could be the better way to see gold jewellery adding shine to the industry.
