Going Beyond the Sparkle
Tiffany & Co recently made an announcement about disclosing the origin of its diamonds. The company plans to share the provenance (the origin) of its newly sourced, individually registered diamonds. When a leading iconic brand like Tiffany takes such a stand, rest of the gems and jewellery industry cannot ignore it. Every trader or a manufacturer in the industry pipeline will be hopefully encouraged by the move. There have been talks of transparency going on and there have been few industry bodies working towards it. However, there needs to be widespread awareness about the need for transparency and more market players, trade organizations need to talk about it.

Other than this, there is another important development of last week that left the industry in a shock. In the times of cash crunch, another lender, ICICI bank has decided to withdraw from diamond trade financing. The bank has decided to shut down its Antwerp branch and has asked its clients to close their accounts by the end of February.
