U.S. polished diamond imports up 22% in July

In July, the imports of polished diamonds into the U.S. increased both in value and volume. In value terms it rose 21.9 percent (on y-o-y basis) to $2.129 billion, while the volume of the said imports rose 6.6 percent to 1.07 million carats, reports say. Exports of polished diamonds rose 18.2 percent to $1.453 billion.

The country's net imports stood at $677 million, while the same was $517 million in the same month last year.

The rough diamond exports dropped 19 percent to $17 million, while rough diamond imports rose 83 percent to $86 million, in the said month, reports say.

The net imports were at $69 million, (which rose around three times in comparison to the same value in July 2012). It is also the highest level since June 2008, reports say.

The country's net diamond account in the month (valued as total of imports less exports) rose by 37.4 percent to $746 million, reports say.
