Organizers of 53rd BGJF say Fair not affected by riots

In view of the street protests in Bangkok, organizers of the 53rd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair (BGJF) has assured the Fair would be proceeding as per schedule, from February 25th to March 1st 2014, and would not be affected by the riots.

Organizers mention that the street protest situation has significantly calmed down since the Thailand general election on February 2nd, which saw minimal incidents. Street protests, peaceful and orderly, now occur only sporadically at just a few venues.

The protests, according to the Fair organizers will not affect the event or visitors. It should be emphasized that despite international media stories to the contrary, Bangkok is not engulfed in city-wide chaos, nor has it been.

According to Mr Somchai Phornchindarak, President of the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association, the organizers have been receiving more than satisfactory pre-registrations for the Fair, for both visitors and for the Business Matching Service. This he attributes to the long-standing reputation of the BGJF for quality and for its impeccable operations.

Bangkok ranks among the safest cities in the world for visitors. Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), through its 62 trade offices worldwide, is promoting the 53rd BGJF among international buyers and visitors, to raise the confidence of international traders as to Bangkok being a viable venue; and to inform visitors of the incentives available to buyers and exhibitors at the Fair. Incentives include: Free hotel accommodation for visitors invited to the Fair by registered exhibitors; ‘Duty free’ conditions for gem and jewellery products sold at the Fair – this is a waiver of the 20 percent duty that normally applies to items brought in for the Fair; the Thai Gem and Jewelry Traders Association, organizers of the BGJF, has prepared alternative insurance for all exhibitors in cases where overseas insurers will offer no insurance cover.

The organizers are keeping a close check on the security needs of the exhibitors and visitors and will keep informing them about the situation in Bangkok. All preparations for the Fair are complete and the event will unfold at the Impact Exhibition Hall, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok Thailand.
