The GIA (Gemological Institute of America) International Gemological Symposium, Oct. 7-9 in Carlsbad, CA, will include the debut – for the gem and jewelry industry – of The Music Paradigm, an engaging and unforgettable learning experience that translates the unique insights of a symphony orchestra conductor into lessons on leadership and collaboration.

“We’ve chosen perhaps the most unique opening for the sixth GIA Symposium,” said Kathryn Kimmel, GIA chief marketing officer and senior vice president. “The Music Paradigm will certainly shift how we all think about organizational dynamics after this incredible opening.”

Created by maestro Roger Nierenberg, The Music Paradigm is an innovative learning program that transfers the conductor’s insight into lessons on leadership and collaboration. During the engaging and interactive session, which will open the Symposium, audience members are seated within a live professional orchestra where they can observe highly trained musicians as they perform. The audience participation leads to an understanding of fascinating and unexpected organizational dynamics within the orchestra and to insights that can be applied to any organization or task. With The Music Paradigm, Nierenberg has conducted over ninety different orchestras, before hundreds of different organizations in twenty-three different countries. “I am very excited to bring The Music Paradigm to this fascinating and unique industry,” said maestro Roger Nierenberg, “People who experience this program walk away with fresh insights and effective tools that can be used in business and everyday life.”

Focused on the theme “New Challenges. Creating Opportunities.” The three-day event will include a research track featuring presentations by leading scientists and academics on topics in minerology, gemology, geology, natural and synthetic diamond formation, and quantum technologies. Professors from the Harvard Business School (HBS) will lead a track on business concepts and innovations, using the renowned case-study method employed in all HBS programs. The HBS program offers an option for a certificate of completion, for which there are a few seats remaining.

A gala event will take place on the opening night of Symposium to celebrate the centennial birthday of Richard T. Liddicoat, the beloved second president of GIA and “the Father of Modern Gemology.”
