India’s total gem and jewellery exports drop 10.9% in April

In the month of April 2015, India’s total gem and jewellery exports dropped 10.9 percent (on y-o-y basis) to value US$ 2,436.65 million, reports say. Cut and polished diamond exports fell 11.03 percent to US$ 1,635.71 million, while it dropped 5.73 percent in volume terms to 2.52 million carats (2.68 million carats in April 2014). The import of cut and polished diamonds dropped a whooping 40 percent in value to US$ 244.13 million.

Rough diamond imports stood at US$ 1,370.82 million, after a 31.10 percent drop (on y-o-y basis) in value terms while it slipped 16.43 percent in volume to 11.16 million carats.

Gold jewellery exports (plain and studded) slipped 18.16 percent US$ 526.76 million (US$ 643.61 million in April 2014). Regarding the SEZs, exports recorded US$ 266.71 million in value (US$ 251.96 million in April 2014.) Coloured gemstone was a segment with slight improvement of 0.23 percent in exports, which valued US$ 25.76 million. Silver jewellery exports rose 7.78 percent to US$ 120.88 million, reports add.
