IDMA inspires industry at World Diamond Congress

The International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) shared some new developments regards its membership, its management and industry initiatives, at the 33rd World Diamond Congress which concluded in Shanghai today. The Congress is a biennial gathering of IDMA and the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB).

IDMA added to its list of diamond manufacturers, two new members - Armenia and Botswana and received an application from Namibia. Moti Ganz, president of the Israel Diamond Manufacturers Association (IsDMA), was elected as the new IDMA president, while the outgoing IDMA president, Jeffrey Fischer was appointed by the members as the Honorary President. Ronnie Vanderlinden is the new Secretary General, succeeding Stephane Fischler, who served in that capacity for the past 10 years.

IDMA reaffirmed its commitment for the diamond Development Initiative and involvement in the Council for Responsible Jewelry Practices, (CRJP), as it announced the launch of the " Global diamond marketing and promotion campaign." This is an initiative to raise awareness amongst the manufactures to concentrate on effective advertising and promotion of polished diamonds and diamond jewellery, to drive consumer demand.

Adding a perspective of industry experts to its initiative, Michael C. Barlerin, a former executive of the World Gold Council, was invited by the IDMA to deliver a keynote, in which he shared IDMA's vision and plans, during the joint session of IDMA and WFDB on May 14. Industry consultant Chaim Evan Zohar was invited to deliver a presentation on the ramifications on the diamond industry and trade, of the Basel II minimum capital adequacy requirements for the banking system.

In Mumbai, IDMA plans to convene a meeting during September 2008, to establish a platform that will coordinate industry-wide advertising and promotion of diamond jewellery on a global scale.
