GJF supports ‘drought surcharge’ by Maharashtra government

In response to the recent announcement by Maharashtra state government to levy a ‘drought surcharge’; on certain items including gold, diamonds and jewellery, the gem and jewellery industry has evoked its support, reports say.

Reports say that the The All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) has expressed full support towards the farmers, and has urged the industry to also support the same. The trade body is also taking initiative to join hands with the government for the same.

Amongst the various items placed under the tax, gold, jewellery and diamonds attract a 1.20 percent tax, petrol and diesel to attract 2 percent, liquor, cigarettes and beverages to attract 5 percent. The tax would be into effect for five months, reports add.
