GIA terminates agreement with school in Florence

GIA (Gemological Institute of America) has terminated its agreement with the owners of the licensee school in Florence, Italy, following the owners intending to file for bankruptcy. The owners of the school used to provide GIA educational programs through its license agreement with GIA.

Post termination of its agreement, GIA is maintaining its commitment towards the students to the school.

“Our commitment is to the students who are enrolled in the Florence school,” said GIA President and CEO Donna Baker. “We’re trying to locate them and help them navigate their plans for the future.” GIA is trying to connect with students already registered for upcoming classes as well as current students. The current students can continue as transitional assistance to other GIA campus locations, GIA Distance Education, or a full refund for those who elect not to continue.

Baker added, “Although the school in Florence is not owned nor controlled by GIA, we are deeply concerned about the students and want to ensure they receive the finest gemological education.” GIA has issued a helpline for such students at GIAFlorenceHelp@gia.edu or through a call at (760) 603-4001 with proof of payment.

As Italy is an important jewellery manufacturing centre in the world, GIA is keen on seeking opportunities to work with Italian trade organizations to offer educational seminars in Italy.
