GIA conducts demonstration of iD100™ instrument at Diamond Club West Coast, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) luncheon

Representatives from Gemological Institute of America GIA attended the Diamond Club West Coast, Inc. (DCWC) monthly luncheon on November 30, 2017.

Russell Shor, senior industry analyst; Dr. Sally Magana, senior research scientist; Judith Shechter, director of global business development; and Kate Donovan, manager of global alumni relations made up the group of guests.

The well attended member luncheon kicked off with an update from Moshe Salem, the DCWC President, and was followed by two informative presentations by GIA.

Russ Shor discussed big diamonds and what factors led to the increased number of rough diamonds over 100 ct in the market. 

Dr. Magana provided background about the underlying principles of synthetic diamond detection as well as recent developments such as the increase in production of synthetic melee. Dr. Magana then provided an overview of the GIA iD100™ gem testing device that DCWC now has available for member use. 

All who attended had the pleasure of viewing a live demonstration of the GIA iD100™ instrument. This device uses advanced spectroscopic technology to distinguish natural diamonds from synthetic (HPHT and CVD) diamonds and diamond stimulants in the colourless to near-colorless range, mounted and loose, rough and cut, in sizes from 0.9 mm diameter to no upper size limit.
