DDRC screens 10,000 diamonds, does not find any synthetics

The Diamond Detection and Resource Centre (DDRC) concluded that it has not detected a single synthetic diamond in its screening of over 10,000 stars and melee diamonds since the past 45 days, as per reports. This has brought much relief to the diamond industry in the country, especially Surat the country’s largest diamond cutting and polishing centre. Surat recently faced the brunt of non-disclosure of large quantum of synthetic diamonds being mixed with natural diamond parcels detected from Mumbai, Surat and other international diamond centres like Belgium, Israel and Dubai in the last two years.

The DDRC is an initiative of the Gems and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) at the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI). The DDRC was set up to check for synthetic stones mixed with diamond parcels submitted by the traders. The analysis of the stones was conducted applying state-of-the-art technology like the Automated Melee Screening (AMS) and other vital equipments.

Reports note that the pace of diamond detection at DDRC was a record. Also, the industry was closed for the summer holidays and around 100 diamond traders in Surat availed the services of DDRC. This performance and the positive outcome of the screening at DDRC negates the noise about alleged mixing of synthetic diamonds in Surat, noted Surat Diamond Association, as per reports. Also the IDI noted that around ‘800 stones have been referred for further testing in other laboratories’ but there has been no synthetic diamond detected within the lot of 10,000 stars and melee diamonds screened, reports add.
