Christie’s HK sale breaks record for colourless diamond sale in Asia

Christie’s HongKong Magnificent Jewels Sale held on 29 november 2011, broke the records of sale of colourless diamonds at auctions in Asia. The record breaker was a pair of perfect round diamonds of 71.38 cts which sold for US$16.4m. Overall the auction in total generated revenues worth US$ 82,705,484.

“Fine coloured stones and natural pearls also fetched extremely strong prices, helping Christie’s realize US$172m, the highest ever annual result for any auction house in Hong Kong,” said Vickie Sek, Director of the Jewellery and Jadeite Department, Christie’s Asia.

The top lot was a 35.77 ct D Flawless Type IIa brilliant-cut diamond sold for S$8,275,350, followed by a 35.61 ct D Flawless Type IIa brilliant-cut diamond bought for US$8,131,654, a pair of 25.38 and 23.12 ct cushion-shaped Colombian emerald ear pendants were the third top lot which sold for US$4,036,318 (which also was a world record for a pair of emerald ear-pendants), followed by a 26.41 ct cushion-shaped Kashmir sapphire and diamond brooch selling for US$3,820,774. A Burmese ruby and diamond cluster necklace of 59.12 cts, by J.W. Currens sold as the fifth top lot for US$3,748,926, followed by a natural coloured pearl and diamond bead necklace selling for US$3,102,294. A 43.36 ct cushion-shaped Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond sold for US$2,642,467 as the seventh top lot, while a 3.17 ct modified rectangular-cut Fancy Intense Blue, IF diamond took the eight top lot spot selling for US$2,383,814. A 68.90 ct emerald and diamond brooch/pendant, by Harry Winston sold for US$2,240,118 and a pair of 4.03 and 4.01 ct pear-shaped Fancy Pink diamond ear pendants sold as the tenth top lot for US$2,024,574.
