CIBJO EU Committee releases eight CIBJO Special Report

The CIBJO EU Committee has prepared the eight CIBJO Special Report. The report addresses liaison activities between CIBJO and the European Commission, which are conducted to take the interests of the jewelry industry in the countries of the European Union, further, reports say.

The report has been released ahead of the 2014 CIBJO Congress in Moscow, opening on May 19.

The CIBJO EU Committee is headed by CIBJO President Gaetano Cavalieri and coordinated by Thilo Brückner. It was formed at the 2013 CIBJO Congress. As its goals, the EU Committee aimed at convincing the European Commission to avoid ‘unintended consequences of the conflict minerals legislation contained in the Dodd-Frank act in the United States’, which many feel has led to a de facto embargo of gold producers from the Great Lakes region of Africa, reports say. According to the committee the efforts have borne fruit, as the first regulation proposal by the EU Commission in March 2014 avoids compulsory legislation, reports say.
