Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair opens to good buyer activity

As day one unfolded for the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair inaugurated on 14th of September 2011with over 1,200 exhibitors in 16 key product categories , at the Impact Challenger, the mood was good with busy floor activity. There were a good may buyers from India , Australia , Russia and the Middle East.

The silver jewellery section attracted the maximum foot fall. Retailers seemed to stay from much indulgence in gold jewellery owing to the high prices of the yellow metal.

The gemstone section too received good response, as many traders were seeking old merchandise as people complained about the shortage in the supply of rough stones from the mining countries . The prices in emerald , rubilite and tanzanite were strong at the show . The exhibitors in loose diamonds saw slow activity, as there is anticipation that prices could change, ut this would e determined more at the forthcoming Hongkong show.

Overall, the ongoing volatility and strong dollar against all major currencies has kept a cautious atmosphere at the show. An exhibitor expressed that volatility makes the business difficult , as buyers are not able to make the final decision and appears to wait and watch, which is not healthy for any business . Exhibitors also feel that the forthcoming Hongkong show could have also dented the buyer enthusiasm at the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair. The next two days would ear a lot of importance for the BKK show.
