The yellow metal continues to face the brunt of unscrupulous deeds. There has been a rise in gold seizure at the Mumbai International airport, by Customs, this fiscal till February compared to same period last year; and the rise has been 300 percent, reports say. Last fiscal, the customs seized 272 kilograms of gold till February 2014, and in the same period this year, the volume seized was 856 kilograms of gold, reports say.

The rise in gold duty and other levies on the yellow metal are causing this spurt, as per the Customs, reports say. Also, around five kilograms of gold were seized by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Mumbai Customs during an operation in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday at the Chatrapatti Shivaji International Airport, reports say. During this operation, 16 gold bars of a total of around 1,860 grams were seized from under the seat of a flight which landed in Mumbai from Doha, which customs stated they seized based on specific intelligence and was worth around Rs 45 lakh. Also, gold bars of a total of around 1,000 grams and worth around Rs 24 lakhs were seized from the toilet of an aircraft from Dubai and gold worth over Rs 50 lakh was seized from two persons coming in from Singapore and Dubai, respectively, reports add.
