A 16.90 carats step-cut diamond went under the hammer at Bonhams New York this week (Tuesday 19th September) and sold for $1,800,000 (£1,338,000).

The diamond, certified as D colour, Internally Flawless and classified as Type IIa, meaning that it has been recognised as the most chemically pure and with exceptional optical transparency, sold to a private U.S. buyer.

Susan Abeles, Head of Jewelry, Bonhams U.S., says: "This is one of the finest examples of a diamond there is given its rarity, color, cut, clarity and transparency. It was admired widely during our previews in New York, LA, Geneva and Hong Kong and the diamond is extraordinarily charming."

The auction also featured a number of Kashmir sapphires and sale highlights included:

- A sapphire and diamond ring by Stephen Russell. Featuring a cabochon sapphire, weighing 5.33 carats, set within a frame of old European cut diamonds, this sold to an online buyer for $235,000 (£174,000). The sapphire is certified as Classic Kashmir and has no indications of heat or clarity enhancement.

- A sapphire and diamond ring centering a cushion shaped mixed-cut sapphire, weighing 5.30 carats, set within a frame of old European-cut diamonds. The 'no heat' sapphire is of Kashmir origin and sold for $230,000 (£170,000) against its pre-sale estimate of $100,000-150,000.

Emeralds were also popular with buyers at Bonhams New York sale this week. An Emerald and Fancy Coloured diamond ring featuring an oval-shaped modified brilliant-cut emerald, weighing 7.00 carats, flanked by similarly cut Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds, created a lot of interest during the global previews and sold for $235,000 (£174,000).
