‘Pink Star’ creates history

The ‘Pink Star, a 59.60 carat, internally flawless fancy vivid pink, type IIa diamond created history at Sotheby’s sale in Geneva when it was sold for $83,187,381, or $1,395,761 per carat, a new world auction record for any diamond or any jewel. The bidding of the oval-cut pink polished diamond that started at $52.5 million, acquired more money than any previous gemstone had at auction, $83 million. The eventual purchase price beat the old record for a single gem by a full 82 percent. The old record was held for three years by the 24.78 Graff Pink, which gathered $45.6 million at an auction.

Sotheby's auction also set a new world record for achieving the largest jewellery sale in history at $199,512,930 against a presale estimate of $112.5 million to $153 million. Numerous other records were also broken during the auction.
